The idea of having a day to honor all the fathers in the world started in Spokane, Washington. The idea came from Sonora Smart Dodd while she was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon back in 1909. Since her mother died, her father, William Jackson Smart took all the responsibilities of raising her. Because of this, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he is to her. The first Father’s Day Celebration was held on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington in honor of Sonora’s father whose birthday falls on the month of June.
