Antioxidant

05/2/08

We all know what an antioxidant is. Actually not everyone. Most people have a shallow understanding of the word antioxidant. All they know is that it is good for the body.

An antioxidant is actually a molecule that is capable of preventing oxidation of other molecules in our body. So what the heck is oxidation? Is it bad? Oxidation is basically a type of chemical reaction that produces free radicals. These free radicals cause damage to our cells by causing chain reactions.

The main task of antioxidants is to terminate the chain reactions through the removal of the free radicals.

Just a small bit of history. The term “antioxidant” was originally used to refer to a chemical that prevented oxygen consumption. Through extensive studies in the late 19th century and early 20th century, the significant benefits of antioxidants were emphasized.

Some of the best antioxidant sources are: blueberry, russet potato, small red bean, pinto bean, cranberry, raspberry and strawberry. Berry healthy!
