Driveshaft

04/26/08

If you have watched the Lost series (or still watching), this word may ring a bell. Remember Charlie? He was a member of the band Drive Shaft.

A driveshaft is a kind of mechanical device that is used to transfer power from a certain motor or engine where in an amount of significant work is applied. Today, automobiles use driveshafts to deliver power between the transmission and the wheels.

In automotive industry, there are three types of driveshafts. The 1-piece driveshaft, the 2-piece driveshaft, and the Slip in Tube driveshaft. The newest among the three is the Slip in Tube driveshaft which aids in Crash Energy Management.

Driveshafts are also used in motorcycles, bicycles and marine engines.

I didn’t know there was such a word. I always thought it was just one of those names that people make up in Lost.
