Vomitorium

04/14/08

If you have been to a concert, a play or a ball, you probably have seen or even passed through a vomitorium. What is a vomitorium in formal and factual description? Well it is a passageway that is located under or behind a group of seats in an amphitheatre. This is used as an exit path for the audience at the end of the show/event. If this description seems a little vague to you, just check out the picture above.

Vomitoria are usually associated to the Ancient Rome but these structures still exist in our theatres today. Before I end this post, I would just like to emphasize that a vomitorium is not a vomit area where wasted people shed out their smelly omelet and sour liquors.
